History of the Conference
Welcome to Miracles at Lake Murray for the 43rd consecutive year!
In 1984, a small group of alcoholics met in the home of a gentleman named Steve M. They had been getting together socially, and thank goodness for all of us here, they decided to expand into this very conference.
The first year, the former Singles in Sobriety was held at Texoma Lodge, where a group of us thought it would be fun to put together a conference. It was centered on speakers, meetings, outdoor activities, games, laughter and fellowship.
A need was met, and the conference was a great success with over 300 people in attendance. Our predecessors were thrilled that we were able to pay the bills, donate to AA General Service and still have seed money for the following year.
In 1986 the conference was moved to Lake Murray. We stayed for 24 years, only leaving when the facility got so run down that we had to provide the speakers with a plunger to keep from being flooded out of their rooms.
The conference then moved to Lake Texoma for 6 years. It being a hotel setting caused us to lose the outdoor usage of our original concept, along with some attendees.
Gratefully, we were able to move back to Lake Murray in 2016. Even though it was not yet completely rebuilt, we were thrilled to be back home.
We are so very fortunate that after all these years, we have been able to retain the original ideals of the conference, combining this beautiful property and recovery at its best.
Thank you.
